An overview of our event in August 2024

Whether you are a seasoned Pit Master with many competitions under your belt or brand new to competition BBQ and have never competed in a sanctioned event before, this event is a lot of fun and you will meet a lot of great pitmasters who all are very happy to share information and help you as you cook.  No matter the sanctioning body, BBQ is a Family, and we would love to welcome you to it.  New cooks never need to worry about forgetting something or not being exactly sure how to do something,  BBQ Family will always help one another out.

This event is a Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned event that requires cooks to turn in Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork (chopped, pulled, sliced – from a pork butt or shoulder, no loins), and Brisket.  These are the same meats required by the Pacific Northwest BBQ Association (PNWBA), another great organization, and they have basically the same requirements and the same meats.

Sanctioning fees this year remain at $240 for a regular space (20’ X 24’) or $295 for a large space (20’ X 35’)  We know that it costs a lot of money to compete in a BBQ Cookoff and we have adjusted our Prize Money Payouts to give you the best opportunity to win back some of your investment.  Basically, if you finish in the top 10 of any of the four meat categories (Chicken, Ribs, Pork, and Brisket) you will receive anywhere from $175 to $400.  And you can win in more than one category.

Besides turning in the competition meats for a team of trained and certified BBQ Judges, interacting with the public to get their opinion of your food is also a fun way to up your game. Selling small samples to the public is a great way for you to make extra money and defray expenses from the cookoff.  It also helps us because we use a "BBQ Bucks" system where the public buys coupons from us to buy food from you.  25% of your sales goes to our American Legion Non-Profit to help with our Youth Programs and Veteran Rehab.

If you’ve ever dealt with a health department you know it can be confusing.  Relax.  It’s much easier than you think.  There are some basic requirements, and we can help you with all of them.  You can find the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department rules to sell food to the public on this site.  While it may sound complicated, we can help you get it right and you will find it a really rewarding experience.

Organizer Note

As a Veteran and creator of the Dupont BBQ Cookoff, I sought a means to bring veterans, the community and BBQ together. Since 2016, we have had amazing success. The city of Dupont's support has been tremendous. The Northwest Landing ROA & Home Course Dupont have been instrumental. Along with this comes personal contribution and local businesses as you see above who have donated to become sponsors of our event. I hope you could please stop by their businesses or think of their services should you need it. When you buy from them, it helps us to continue to produce our amazing event. Proceeds from our event go right back into the community.

TOM RIGGS

"The The members of the American Legion Post #53 Pat Tillman Memorial have volunteered tirelessly. We thank them all!"

Special Note to Mr. Scott Collins who has been a generous sponsor for many years of the Dupont BBQ Cookoff.
